Description
The cashew tree, named after the botanical name Anacardium occidentale, grows in tropical evergreen forests, producing high-priced cashew seeds and cashew apples. The tree is capable of growing up to 46 feet, but also has dwarf cashews that can grow up to 20 feet. These dwarf cashews are more profitable with earlier maturity and higher yields.
This type of cashew tree is only found in North American countries such as Northeastern Brazil, Central America, and the Caribbean. This means that the Portuguese colonists in Brazil did not start exporting cashew nuts since the 1550s. India, Ivory Coast, and Vietnam were major producers in 2017.
Its oval-shaped leaves, which have a hard midrib, are known for their medicinal properties. Each leaf is 10 to 20 cm long and 7 to 12 cm wide. Younger cashew leaves are considered better for various treatments than mature cashews. These young leaves are purple-green on the top and bright green below. Young leaves have a tough spinach-like texture, which gives it a firm, energetic feel.
