Parts of Peepal Tree

Though the peepal tree can grow in many types of soil, it thrives nutritiously in alluvial and clayey soils. . The sacred fig tree has many medicinal properties and grows well in shallow soils, including rocky outcrops.

The trunk of these trees look like huge pillars that are in direct contact with the roots. These irregularly shaped stems grow upright using a lateral structure called buttresses. The stem of this plant is light gray in color and has rough bark on the outside. It also has numerous medicinal properties.

Ficus Religiosa is the largest tree from the family of figs. When it was a sapling, these plants grow on another plant called the epiphytic. Not only on other plants, they also grow on the cracks of the walls and are strangled by its rope-like roots. Due to this growing nature, these plants grow into a solitary tree over time. These sacred trees are grown in most places as they are drought and frost resistant.

Leaves

Peepal trees have cordate (heart-shaped), smooth and glossy leaves with a distinctive elongated drip tip. The leaves are 10–17 cm long, 8–12 cm wide, and petiole are 6–10 cm long.

The solid nerve located in the middle of the leaf, joins with the other leaf nerve at the upper end to form a wavy line near the edge of the leaf. Sharp leaf tips help to keep water out of the leaves after rain and keeps the tree dry.

Peepal trees that grow in tropical regions shed their leaves in the autumn and from March to April. Young leaves are pink to copper in color, medium leaves are light green, and mature leaves are dark green.

Flowers

Very differently, the flowers of the peepal plant are completely hidden within its fruit, with a few male flowers located near the small opening of petals that are found at the apex of the fruit, all of which largely support a single pollen.
