Properties of Garlic and Honey

Garlic and honey have been utilized as traditional medicines since ancient times. Allicin is the primary health compound found in garlic. Additionally, garlic contains sulfur, oxygen, and other chemical compounds that contribute to its antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Research indicates that crushing or chopping fresh garlic can quickly release more allicin, making the use of fresh garlic in food preparation more beneficial for health.

Raw honey, particularly Multifloral honey, is a natural source of polyphenols and flavonoids, which provide high antioxidant properties. These antioxidants enable honey to combat inflammation in the body effectively. Honey also possesses significant antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Compared to Multifloral honey, certain Monofloral varieties like Manuka honey offer even greater antioxidant benefits against bacteria and fungi.

The chemical compounds and properties of honey help to balance the immune system and prevent various illnesses.

Many people question whether there are any side effects of consuming garlic on an empty stomach or if it’s safe to do so. Rest assured, it is generally safe to eat garlic on an empty stomach. There are even scientifically proven benefits to consuming garlic daily.

Eating raw garlic with honey offers numerous health advantages. In traditional Ethiopian medicine, local honey is used to treat skin infections, respiratory problems, and even diarrhea.

Traditionally, garlic has been used to treat coughs and colds. It is also employed to enhance the immune system and alleviate asthma symptoms. In traditional Arab medicine, people used garlic to address high blood pressure, heart disease, toothache, arthritis, infections, and constipation. Let’s explore the benefits of raw honey and garlic in detail.

May Help in Weight Loss

Garlic and honey are excellent blood purifiers that help naturally detoxify the body. Consuming two cloves of garlic on an empty stomach daily can lead to significant weight loss results. The compounds in garlic assist in burning excessive bad fats in the body.

Moreover, garlic increases the body’s metabolism, which further supports weight loss efforts. You can easily prepare a weight loss remedy using garlic and honey. Simply place some honey and freshly chopped garlic cloves in a jar, close the lid, and gently shake to coat the cloves with honey. Consume this combination every morning. You can store this mixture in a glass jar for daily consumption.

May Treat Depression

Garlic is beneficial for both physical and mental health. It possesses remarkable mood-lifting properties. When consumed on an empty stomach, garlic helps balance the chemicals present in our bodies. Depression is often caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals, and garlic can help restore this balance, effectively treating depression.

May Improve Brain Health And Memory

Both honey and garlic contain significant amounts of antioxidants. The chemical compounds in garlic and honey help boost the immune system and protect against illness. They may also help prevent certain brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Some studies have shown that garlic extract contains high levels of kyolic acid, which is primarily responsible for its antioxidant properties. These powerful antioxidants protect the brain from damage caused by aging or other diseases. Consuming garlic and honey on an empty stomach daily may help improve concentration, focus, and memory in some individuals.

May Control Blood Sugar

Garlic is widely used in diabetic diets due to its rich allicin content, which helps control blood sugar levels. Using chopped or crushed garlic releases higher levels of allicin. Consuming raw garlic twice a day can effectively help manage blood sugar levels.

May Improve Heart Health

Numerous studies have demonstrated that garlic is highly beneficial for heart health. The antioxidant properties in honey also help combat heart problems.

According to medical reviews, garlic helps reduce the risk of heart problems and strokes by lowering high cholesterol levels, reducing high blood pressure, preventing blood clotting, and maintaining the elasticity of blood vessels.

Another study suggests that the sulfur in garlic makes blood vessels more elastic and prevents damage to heart muscles. Thus, garlic improves overall heart health and helps prevent blood clots, heart disease, and stroke.

May Reduce Cholesterol

Garlic is an excellent remedy for high cholesterol levels. Consuming garlic with honey on an empty stomach daily can significantly lower elevated cholesterol levels. LDL, a type of bad cholesterol, is the main culprit behind the hardening of blood vessels, which can lead to stroke and other heart problems. Research has shown that consuming garlic can help lower LDL cholesterol levels.

May Reduce Hypertension

Consuming raw garlic on an empty stomach can effectively combat symptoms of hypertension. Doctors often recommend that individuals at risk of hypertension consume garlic and honey on an empty stomach to help prevent associated risks.

May Prevent Cancer

Garlic is rich in antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties. Consuming garlic and honey on an empty stomach may help prevent the formation of cancer cells. The powerful antioxidants and detoxification properties of garlic contribute to this potential benefit.

May Act as a Blood Purifier

Consuming garlic on an empty stomach acts as an excellent blood purifier. The detoxification property of garlic helps remove impurities from the blood and improves blood vessel health. The antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of garlic and honey play a significant role in the blood purification process.

May Fight Infection

Garlic possesses natural antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Consuming garlic and honey on an empty stomach can enhance the body’s ability to fight infections. Regular consumption of garlic may help prevent infections for extended periods. In fact, a US study has demonstrated the antibacterial effect of a garlic and honey combination in fighting standard and clinical pathogenic bacteria in infections.

It May Promote Lung Health

The chemical compounds in garlic help cleanse the respiratory tract. Regular garlic consumption may help combat various pulmonary diseases, such as bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis, and whooping cough. Garlic also helps ease lung congestion and improve oxygen levels in the body. Due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, garlic is an excellent food and natural medicine for treating the common cold.

It May Aid Digestion

Garlic is rich in antioxidants and antibiotic properties, which help improve gut health. The vitamins and minerals in garlic also play a major role in enhancing bladder, liver, and kidney health. The anti-stress properties of garlic help reduce the secretion of excessive stomach acid, ensuring a healthy digestive tract.

It May Regulate Blood Pressure

Consuming garlic on an empty stomach is well-known for its ability to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The compounds in garlic improve the immune system and purify the blood. The rich elements in garlic also aid in the absorption of cholesterol in the body and help maintain healthy blood pressure levels.

It May Treats Cough, Cold, and Sore Throat

Raw garlic and honey contain high levels of antioxidants, which help increase the body’s immunity. Regular consumption of garlic can help prevent flu and the common cold. It is also an effective remedy for asthma. The garlic flu tonic has shown excellent results in treating flu and the common cold. Here’s a recipe for preparing garlic flu tonic:

  • 1 tbsp of chopped ginger
  • Apple cider vinegar

Method

1. Take a medium-sized glass jar.
2. Add chopped onion to the bottom layer.
3. Then add chili peppers, followed by ginger on top.
4. Squeeze lemon juice and pour apple cider vinegar over the ingredients.
5. Ensure you leave some space at the top and close the lid tightly.
6. Store the jar in a cool, dark place.

You can start consuming this mixture from the next day to effectively fight against cold, flu, and sore throat symptoms.

How To Eat Garlic and Honey

Using garlic and honey in cooking or taking them as natural supplements can provide many health benefits. Consuming freshly chopped and crushed garlic offers the most significant health advantages. Aged garlic extract and garlic powder also contain high amounts of beneficial compounds. While garlic oil has lower health properties compared to garlic extract and powder, it can still be used in cooking to add flavor.

Typically, garlic supplements contain garlic powder, and there is no standardized recommended dosage for garlic powder or supplements. Some researchers suggest that consuming 150 to 2,400 mg of garlic powder daily can provide substantial health benefits.

Pure honey is commonly used as a natural remedy for cold, cough, and sore throat. Consuming eucalyptus honey, lemon honey, and Labiatae honey can effectively treat coughs. Taking a spoonful of honey or adding it to herbal tea can help ease flu and cold symptoms. Honey can also be applied topically to soothe allergic rashes, skin irritation, and acne flare-ups. Additionally, honey is used to treat burns, skin wounds, and scratches.

There are several ways to consume garlic and honey on an empty stomach:
– Chop 2 cloves of garlic, add them to tea, and drink with breakfast.
– Eat raw crushed garlic before breakfast.
– Fry garlic in butter and add it to an omelet.
– Eat garlic cloves dipped in honey as a snack.

Risks and Side Effects of Garlic and Honey

While consuming garlic and honey is an excellent combination for weight loss and overall health, it may cause side effects in some individuals. It’s advisable to consult your doctor before taking garlic and honey supplements.

Honey Interaction

Despite the numerous benefits of eating honey, regular consumption may increase blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. Therefore, it’s crucial to consult your doctor before adding honey to your diet if you have diabetes. While honey generally doesn’t interact with other medicines, it may cause allergies in some people. Individuals with allergies to bee pollen should consult their doctor before consuming honey.

Pollen in honey can trigger reactions such as coughing, wheezing, dizziness, throat or face swelling, vomiting, nausea, fainting, weakness, skin irritation, sweating, and irregular heartbeat.

Garlic Interaction

Some people may be allergic to garlic. Consuming excessive amounts of garlic or garlic supplements may reduce blood thickness and increase the risk of bleeding. For this reason, garlic can cause negative interactions with blood-thinning medications. Warfarin, salicylate, and clopidogrel are some medications that may interact negatively with garlic. Garlic may also interact with saquinavir, an antiviral drug used to treat HIV.

Final Words

Garlic and honey have been used in traditional medicine for centuries and offer numerous health benefits. Recent medical research has also confirmed the benefits of raw honey and garlic for overall immune system health. However, there is limited research on the exact dosage of garlic and honey for optimal effects. It’s advisable to consult a doctor or diet specialist to prevent potential side effects of garlic on an empty stomach and to manage any potential increase in blood sugar due to regular honey consumption.

The medicinal properties and nutritional value of garlic and honey provide many health benefits, making them suitable for use in daily cooking. However, it’s recommended to consult your doctor before incorporating garlic and honey supplements into your diet.

Just getting started with garlic and honey, and hoping for the best. Peeled the garlic cloves and have been in honey for 6 weeks now. Make sure you “burp” the jar once in a while to release the pressure. Also looking into making black garlic ( more for cooking than health benefits).
