Description
Thalisapathiri, also known as Silver Fir in India, has the botanical name Abies webbiana. It belongs to the Pinaceae family, commonly known as the pine family. These tall evergreen trees grow at high altitudes ranging from 2,800 to 10,000 feet across the Himalayan region, including Bengal, Kashmir, Nepal, and Assam.
Thalisapathiri trees feature dense horizontal branches and a distinct brown bark, often reaching up to 60 meters in height. Young shoots are covered with fine brown hairs. The powder, made from the leaves or bark, carries a unique aroma similar to terebinthine and is known for its woody, earthy flavor.
The plant naturally contains a variety of phytochemicals including beta-sitosterol, n-triacontanol, abiestin, and bioflavonoids. It also has two significant glycosides: methylbetuloside and betuloside.
The essential oil components of this plant include alpha-pinene, limonene, carvone, beta-pinene, and bornyl acetate, along with naturally occurring plant compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, steroids, amino acids, and tannins.
