You can also consume sports drinks to rehydrate your body and restore potassium and sodium level. Fruit juices like orange juice will also be helpful in restoring potassium.
It would help, only if you have avoided certain drinks such as caffeinated drinks, alcohol, carbonated beverages, and hot drinks, which further irritate the digestive tract.
What is Good for Diarrhea?
During diarrhea, better consider eating small and frequent lighter meals instead of over eating three larger meals. A good diet for diarrhea is fruits with a rich source of pectin. Foods enriched with potassium like potatoes and sweet potatoes; drinks with electrolytes such as soup and sports drinks; cooked protein-rich vegetables are also good for diarrhea.
Having a liquid diet such as salty broths, soups, and drinks for diarrhea will aid in calming and relaxing the digestive system. People with diarrhea can also eat BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Apple sauce, Toast). This diet has food items that contain a low amount of fiber and a high quantity of starch, which may improve solid bowel movements. It also has nutrients, such as potassium and pectin.
What is Bad for Diarrhea?
Better avoid greasy foods, high-fat foods, spicy foods, foods with artificial sweeteners, high levels of fructose foods. Because it will irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Consuming dairy products may also worsen the diarrhea conditions in some people. These foods will further aggravate your pitta.
- Spicy Foods
Usually, Spicy ingredients cause displeasure in the digestive system. So consuming spicy foods during diarrhea will worsen the situation. That’s why people who are experiencing diarrhea should eat bland foods, which lower the risk of triggering the digestive system.
- Fried Foods
Fried foods are rich in fats and oils, which may be difficult to digest by the sensitive digestive system during diarrhea and so it makes symptoms worse. So, it is not advisable to consume fat or oily foods during the recovery period of diarrhea.
- Sugary foods and artificial sweeteners

According to Ayurvedic text, diarrhea is caused due to the weakened digestive fire, which is due to excess pitta. This diarrhea will make the absorption and assimilation process slower, and so the movement of food through the digestive system gets accelerated, leading to liquid stools. Ayurveda has suggested various remedies to calm down pitta and to stimulate Agni. Here are the following remedies that act against the pitta’s hot, sharp, and liquid qualities, thus helpful in returning regular bowel movements.
Binding Foods for Diarrhea
Diet is the most effective way to treat diarrhea. Here, you have to eat a pitta pacifying diet, nourishing foods and consume energetic cool foods and drinks such as cilantro, coconut, coriander, fennel, and mint. We have listed some of the binding foods for diarrhea.
- Stewed Apples
Slice 1–2 apples and place it in a small saucepan with sufficient water. Add one teaspoon ghee and a pinch of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, and mineral salt. Boil it in a simmer for 10-20 minutes. The apples are astringent, which aids in binding the stools.
- Spiced Bananas
Took 1–2 ripe banana pieces and added it with one teaspoon of warm ghee and a pinch of cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg. This delicious dish will nourish yourself, and the potassium content in the bananas aids in binding the stool.
- Cooked Rice and Yogurt
Take the needed amount of cooked rice and add one tablespoon of ghee and some amount of homemade yogurt. Mix them together and eat. This gives a soothing, binding, and nourishing property. Probiotics present in the yogurt restores the strength of Agni.
- Diluted Yogurt
Mix 1/2 cup of fresh and plain homemade yogurt, half a cup of water, and a small quantity of fresh ginger and drink it. It’s probiotic property will make the drink easy to digest and triggers Agni.
Natural Remedies for Diarrhea ( Using Herbs and Spices)
There are various herbal combinations that are useful to calm down pitta in the digestive system. You can prepare this combination with simple ingredients that are available in your house.
Preparation 1: Add one teaspoon ghee, 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder, and 1/4 teaspoon natural sugar. Consume this mixture thrice a day for two to three days to get relief from diarrhea.
Preparation 2: Mix half teaspoon fennel powder and half teaspoon ginger powder. Chew and eat this mixture gently two to three times per day.
Preparation 3: Boil a few mint leaves, one tablespoon of fennel seeds, two cardamoms, and a small piece of cinnamon with three glasses of water for 10 minutes. Then filter it, add sugar and salt. Drink it thrice a day.
Preparation 4: Add one teaspoon of psyllium husk and 1 cup of fresh, plain homemade yogurt and consume this mixture at bedtime. The psyllium husks have the capacity to absorb excess pitta and aids in binding the stool. The yogurt provides probiotic property for kindling Agni.
Mostly, diarrhea will last for only a few days, and it also gets cured with home treatments. Intaking a simple proper diet, improving fluid intake, and herbal or homemade medicinal preparation will minimize the symptoms quickly. If the body does not respond to this, consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
