Yes — the CDC lists oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) as one of several EPA-registered active ingredients that provide effective mosquito protection. It’s one of the very few plant-based options recognised alongside synthetic repellents like DEET and picaridin. Note that the CDC recommendation applies to the refined product (p-menthane-3,8-diol / PMD), but the natural essential oil containing high citronellal also provides meaningful repellent activity.

Add 3–4 drops to hot water and inhale the steam, or diffuse throughout the day. It’s particularly pleasant for respiratory use because the lemon scent is gentler and less medicinal than regular eucalyptus. The CDC does not recommend oil of lemon eucalyptus for children under 3 years old. For children over 3, use only in well-diluted form — half the adult concentration (10–12 drops per 100ml for sprays, 1–2 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil). Diffusing at low concentrations in a well-ventilated room is generally considered safe for older children. Always consult a paediatrician before using any essential oil on or around young children.
