Born in the Kurinji Hills, Forged for Battle
The word “Silambam” comes from the Tamil words “silam” (hill) and “bambu” (bamboo) — literally “bamboo from the hills.” This ancient weapon was wielded by kings, rebels, and warriors who defended Tamil Nadu for millennia.
Mentioned in Sangam Literature (4th Century BC)
References in the Silappadikaram and other Sangam texts confirm Silambam was practiced since at least the 4th century BC. Bamboo staves were in such demand that they were exported to Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians through the ancient port city of Madurai.
The Weapon of Tamil Freedom Fighters
Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Puli Thevar, and the Maruthu Brothers all relied on their Silambam armies — known as “Thadii Pattalam” — to resist the British East India Company. The British eventually banned Silambam, fearing its power in rebellion.
A Living Art — Now a Global Sport
Today Silambam is practiced across India, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. The World Silambam Association has UN Special Status, and efforts are underway for inclusion in the Asian Games and Olympics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Silambam is an ancient weapon-based martial art originating from Tamil Nadu, India, dating back over 3,000 years. The primary weapon is the bamboo staff. It is one of the oldest known martial arts in the world, referenced in Tamil Sangam literature from the 4th century BC. Today it’s practiced as a martial art, competitive sport, fitness regime, and cultural performance.
The standard Silambam stick should ideally touch the practitioner’s forehead, about three fingers from the head. This is typically around 5.5 feet (167.6 cm) for most adults. Different lengths are used for different techniques — the 3-foot “sedikuchi” short stick is another common variant. Our sticks are the standard 5.5-foot competition and training length.
These sticks are made from high-quality natural bamboo — the traditional material for Silambam. Bamboo is preferred because it combines durability, lightweight handling, and natural flexibility. Each stick has a smooth, splinter-free finish for safe and comfortable practice.
Absolutely. While designed for Silambam, these sticks are also suitable for Kalaripayattu (Kerala), Gatka (Punjab), Lathi Khela (Bengal), Mardani Khel (Maharashtra), Pari Khanda (Bihar), and as Bo Staffs for Karate and Kung Fu kata training. They can also be used for yoga stick exercises and general fitness.
The pack of 6 is ideal for martial arts academies, schools, and training groups. It’s also practical for individual practitioners, since bamboo sticks can wear over time with intensive training. Having spares ensures uninterrupted practice. At $189 for 6 sticks ($31.50 each), it offers excellent value for authentic, handcrafted sticks shipped internationally.
Yes, Silambam is actively taught to children in schools across Tamil Nadu. It builds discipline, fitness, and confidence. However, children should always practice under qualified supervision. The 5.5-foot length is standard for adults; younger practitioners may benefit from shorter sticks (4–5 feet) which are also available — contact us for custom orders.
The 6 sticks are carefully bundled and packed in protective wrapping to prevent damage during transit. Total package weight is approximately 3 kg. Shipping is via DHL or UPS Express with tracking. Delivery to USA, UK, and Canada typically takes 5–7 business days.
