Description
Red spinach plants are attractive, beautiful, and have dark red flesh that can grow to 10 feet tall. It has many aesthetic values. The young leaves of red spinach are used for greens and the seeds can be toasted to eat as grains.
Red spinach can tolerate heat exceptionally. This is an Asian vine that loves being in heat. It has red stems and delicious, fresh red leaves that are great in salads, stir-fried foods, and smoothies.
It produces tons of purple berries. The flavor is relatively bland, but the color is deep purple. These are high in anthocyanin and are a natural dye for fabrics and foods.
How to Grow Red Spinach from Seeds:
- Red spinach requires full sun. As it has a high tolerance to heat, it grows in almost any well-drained soil other than dense clay.
- Sow seeds 10-12 inches apart and cover them with soil.
- Germination takes 3-4 days if the temperatures are between 60-90 degrees F.
- If you planted indoor and will move your seeds outside, plant them 1.5 to 2 feet apart.
- Red spinach is heat resistant and drought, so it needs watering only once or twice a week during dry periods.
- To grow as taller plants, use fertilizer once or twice a year or can add compost. Red spinach reaches between 4 and 6 feet tall, but if the soil is fertile with plenty of nitrogen and phosphorous, this Asian vine can grow around 8 feet tall!
