About Cissus Quadrangularis or Hadjod (Pirandai)

Hadjod is a perennial shrub that belongs to the Vitaceae family, and it is native to hot and arid places of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Africa. 

It is scientifically known as Cissus Quadrangularis and grows up to 15-meter height with the branches, and it is split into four quadrangular arrangements. The leaves of this plant are bright green in color, sharp edges and contain three lobes. 

This plant contains white or jade flowers and red berries. Every part of Veldt Grape is edible, leaves and stem are used in traditional cooking and medicinal purposes.

How to use Veldt grape according to Ayurveda

  • Infrequent Menses: Just burn Veldt Grape and mix its ash with one teaspoon of ghee. Consume it three times for three days.
  • Diarrhea: Mix one teaspoon of Cissus Quadrangularis ash with warm water. Drink it two times a day.
  • Obesity: Add 1/2 tablespoon of Veldt Grape burnt powder with coconut water or Buttermilk and consume it two times a day.
  • Piles: Take one tablespoon ash of Veldt Grape. Mix it with one teaspoon of ghee. Have it two times a day.
  • Stomach Ache: Grind the same amount of Cissus Quadrangularis and Drumstick flowers and add one tablespoon of dried coconut to it. Then, extract the juice from it and drink it two times a day.
  • Fracture: Mix the Veldt Grape juice with Sesame oil and boil it. Apply it over the fracture.
  • Muscular Pain: Grind Veldt Grape plant with Turmeric rhizome and apply it on the painful areas.
  • Asthma: Grind the fresh stems of Cissus Quadrangularis to make a paste. Have 2 grams of that paste with warm water once a day.
  • Sexual Debility: Take one tablespoon of Cissus Quadrangularis, Nutmeg powder, and ghee. Mix them. Mix them and have it three times a day for a week in a divided portion.
  • Digestive Disorder: Took 50 g dried Veldt Grape leaves to prepare powder. Add 25 g of dried ginger and Black Pepper powder. Consume this mixture for about 3 g twice a day.
  • Throat Irritation: Consume fresh juice of Veldt grape stem with honey.

Culinary Uses

  • Leaves and young shoots of Cissus Quadrangularis are used in the preparation of curries and fries.
  • Veldt Grape ash is used as an alternative for baking powder.
  • Young green stems can be eaten after cooking.
  • Stem and leaves of Cissus Quadrangularis are made into chutney and then eaten.
  • Veldt Grape young shoots and leaves are acidic in taste and can be eaten alone or with other vegetables.

Recipes using Cissus Quadrangularis

1. Veldt grape chutney

Ingredients

  • Veldt Grape – 1 bunch
  • Urad dal – 1 tbsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tbsp
  • Dry Red chilli – 2 to 3
  • Small onion – 10
  • Garlic – 10
  • Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind (lemon size)
  • Salt to taste

Process

Peel the skin and fiber of the Veldt grape plant. Then cut it into small pieces.

Heat a pan, add oil, and roast dry chili and chana dal. Then add coconut, small onion, garlic, cumin seeds, and curry leaves and roast it.

Add veldt grape and roast it until the raw smell goes out. Then add tamarind.

After roasting, leave it for ten minutes. Then add salt and blend it using a blender.

For the seasoning, fry mustard seed, urad dhal, and curry leaves in a teaspoon of oil. Add them to the ground veldt grape paste.

2. Veldt Grape Rasam

Ingredients

  • Chopped Veldt Grape – 1/2cup
  • Split moong dal – 1/4cup (cooked and mashed)
  • Tomato – 1no (crushed)
  • Garlic cloves – 2nos (crushed)
  • Green chilies – 2nos (slit opened)
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2tsp
  • Asafoetida powder – 1/4tsp
  • Dry red chilly – 1no
  • Lemon juice – 1tbsp
  • Ghee – 1tbsp
  • Curry leaves

Ingredients to Roast and Grind into a paste

  • Peppercorns – 1tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1tsp
  • Coriander seeds -2tbsp
  • Dry red chilies – 2nos
  • Channa dal – 1tsp

Process

Cook and mash the dal separately. Then add it with crushed tomatoes, crushed garlic, cloves, grounded paste, and salt in a bowl with enough water and keep separately.

Heat the pan and add ghee. Then fry mustard seeds, cumin seeds, slit opened green chilies, curry leaves, dry red chilly, and asafoetida powder for a few minutes.

Add chopped veldt grape pieces and saute them for a few minutes. Then mix the dal mixture that is prepared already and cook until the rasam starts bubbling.

Finally, add lemon juice and off the stove.

Effect On Doshas

Hadjod contains Madhura rasa and Katu that becomes Katu vipaka finally. It helps to balance and equalize Vata and Kapha doshas. 

It effectively eliminates AMA toxins present in the system because it may lead to incomplete digestion. Additionally, Cissus Quadrangularis (Hadjod) contains an inherent Ushna virya and provides common Ruksha, Laghu, and Sara gunas.

Dosage of Cissus Quadrangularis (Hadjod)

The dosage of Hadjod can vary from person to person depending on the condition, age, and severity of the patients. It can vary depending on the formulation also.

Hadjod (Veldt Grape) Powder

The powdered form of Hadjod is prepared from leaves and stems of dried C. Quadrangularis. It is a finely ground powder of Hadjod herb.

The Cissus Quadrangularis juice is prepared by pressing and crushing the leaves and stem of the plant. It is also known as Hadjod Svarasa.

Hadjod Capsules & Tablets

There are two types of capsules and tablets prepared from Hadjod that are available in the name of Cissus Quadrangularis tablets and Hadjod capsules in the market. 

In many cases, it is recommended to take 1-2 tablets or capsules twice a day after food. If they contain powder, the dosage can increase, as mentioned in the table.

Side Effects of Cissus Quadrangularis (Hadjod)

The natural form of Hadjod is safe to consume when you take the proper dosage. The high dose may cause some side effects, especially for Pitta Prakriti or Pitta health problems.
