Botanical Parts of Black Pepper

Black pepper is a flowering plant that is cultivated for its fruit. It is dried and then used for medicinal purposes. Black pepper plants are grown in tropical areas, the leaves and seeds of these plants have essential oil that produces a strong fragrance.

The pepper plant is a perennial woody vine that grows up to 4 m in height with a support system like trees or poles. Usually, they won’t grow in too dry soil, flooding, moist, well-drained, and organic-rich soil. Apart from soil conditions, this plant does not have the ability to produce a good yield at an altitude of 900 m above sea level. The propagation process of this plant can be done by the stem cuttings of the plant about 40 cm and then leave it to climb over the trees or climbing frames.

The leaves of pepper plants are alternate, petiolate, simple, and oval in shape. The size of the leaves is 2.0 to 3.9 inches in length and 1.2 to 2.4 inches in cross. The color of the upper region is dark green while the bottom is whitish-green.

Flowers are greenish-yellow in color and are arranged in spiral form. The flower spike gets out from the main stem node and the mature spike is about the size of 2.8 to 5.9 in.

The size of the fruit is from 4mm to 6mm. Initially, the color of the fruit is green, then the color changes from yellow or red when it matures, and finally black when dried. The single stem has 20 to 30 fruit spikes. The seeds occupy the largest area in the fruit.

Where Does Black Pepper Come From?

The origin of Black pepper is the Malabar coast of South India (Kerala) and there are various varieties of pepper species found in Burma and south India. 

Almost two thousand years ago, pepper was harvested in the southeast parts of Asian countries like Malaysia, India, and Indonesia. Olden texts of Greek and roman civilizations say that the trade of pepper was from India and the western parts of the world.
